HUANG YI QUE, master of the Chinese string puppet, (each one requiring 16 to over 30 strings), is renowned for his perfection and profound performing skill. Through exquisite manipulation, meticulous arrangement of the wire, and years of experience, he is able to breathe life and spirit into the puppets. His nonverbal variety style solo marionette show features scenes from Beijing Opera as well as comical and contemporary scenes such as his famous Monkey on a Bicycle. He has been the leading performer for the government supported Quanzhou Puppet Troupe since its formation and is responsible for many technical innovations. His shows have delighted audiences around China and at international festivals, but this is his first tour to the United States. Chinese string puppet art originated in the Han Dynasty some two thousand years ago and is the only ancient Chinese puppet style that has its own music known as 'puppet tunes' consisting of nearly three hundred 'qupais.' HUANG YI QUE's exquisitely carved, wooden puppets find prominence in their individuality and expressiveness. His troupe, the Quanzhou Puppet Theater, inherits and carries forward this ancient art form and is recognized as the leading representative of Chinese string puppet art both at home and abroad. | |
